Polypropylene Technologies

Synthetic fibers, including polypropylene (PP) fiber, continue to replace natural fibers. PP is a thermoplastic linear hydrocarbon polymer produced from its monomer, propylene, using a chain-growth polymerization process catalyzed by either Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalysts. PP produced with metallocene catalysts have improved properties; for fibers, these include better processability, finer fiber denier, and less susceptibility to fiber breakage. PP fibers can be broadly classified into: (1) bulked continuous filaments (BCF), (2) tow, (3) staple, (4) monofilament, (5) spun bonded, (6) melt blown and (7) slit film. The use of these different types of fibers depends on the end use application. Depending on the way the fibers are manufactured, the manufacturing process can be broadly classified as woven or non-woven; nonwovens include spun bonded, staple, and melt blown PP.

Market Drivers and Major Players in the Global Polypropylene Fibers Market

PP fibers are used in various end use markets that include carpets, hygiene and medical, geotextile, furniture and furnishing, industrial filtration, packaging, agriculture, apparel, and others. PP enjoys a robust growth outlook enabled by a wide range of market drivers and rapidly growing applications. PP fibers are forecasted to grow due to the growing demand of carpets, hygiene (including diapers, gowns, and masks) and medical applications, geotextiles, and other applications, particularly in developing regions.
